Ukraine, Norway, Montenegro and Albania have joined the sanctions against Russian companies involved in the construction of the Kerch bridge to occupied Crimea, imposed by the EU Council on 30 July 2018.

"July 30, 2018, the Council adopted a Decision (CFSP) 2018/1085. The decision to add additional persons to the list of persons, entities and bodies subject to restrictive measures... the candidate Countries Montenegro and Albania, and the EFTA country member of the European economic area, and Ukraine are attached to this Declaration", - stated in the Declaration by the high representative on behalf of the EU on the harmonization of the positions of a number of countries concerning restrictive measures in response to actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.

"They (these countries – if) will ensure that their national policies conform to the decision of the Council. The European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it," - the document says.

In addition, these same four countries acceded to the EU Council decision of 5 July a further extension of six months introduced in 2014 sanctions against certain sectors of the Russian economy.

As a reminder, on 5 July, the Council extended until 31 January 2019 the economic sanctions that target specific sectors of the Russian economy. "These measures are directed against the financial, energy and defense sectors, as well as against the scope of dual-use products. Initially they were introduced on 31 July 2014 for a period of one year in response to Russia's actions to destabilize the situation in Ukraine, and then was reinforced in September 2014," the statement reads.

Economic sanctions include the restriction of access to primary and secondary capital market for the EU 5 Russian financial institutions, three major Russian energy companies and three defense companies the ban on the arms trade, ban on exports to Russia dual-use goods for military purposes or for the Russian army, the limitation of Russian strategic technologies of oil production.

March 19, 2015, the European Council linked the duration of the sanctions with the full implementation of the Minsk agreements.

30 July 2018, the EU Council also imposed sanctions against Russian companies involved in the construction of the Kerch bridge. In particular, as of July 31 under the European sanctions are the company PJSC "Mostotrest" and LLC "stroygazmontazh", previously included in the U.S. sanctions list, JSC "Institute Giprostroymost - Saint-Petersburg", JSC "Shipbuilding plant "Zaliv", LLC "stroygazmontazh - Bridge", Vologda, JSC "WAD".
