NAEK "Energoatom" has signed a contract with the company'orano to assess the feasibility of reprocessing services of used nuclear fuel assemblies for Ukrainian VVER-1000 plant at La Hague (France).

"Energoatom" will study the possibility of processing nuclear waste in France

The contract was signed by the first Vice-President - technical Director of NNEGC "Energoatom" Alexander Shavlakov and senior Executive Vice President of the division processing company'orano Pascal Aubree, reports Biznestsentr with reference to the press service of the Ukrainian company.

According to the report, after the completion of the operation in power reactor spent fuel contains 96% of the materials to be recycled, and 4% of the final waste.

The process implemented at the plant in La Hague, the company'orano, involves the separation of materials suitable for re use for electricity production, final waste exposed to the safe and reliable processing and packaging.

"The first step of this process, carried out remotely and in a fully automated mode, called cutting and dissolution. At this stage, the metal shell of the fuel assemblies, which contains material is cut into fragments of 35 mm for further processing. Metallic fragments are washed and compacted using a press with a force of 2.5 tons, which reduces the amount of waste in 5 times", – is told in the message.

As reported, in the early years of the French Areva, one of the largest manufacturers of equipment for the nuclear industry, changed its name to'orano.

We will remind, the President of NNEGC "Energoatom" Yuriy Nedashkovsky in the summer of 2015 reported that the French AREVA, offering the lowest price won the tender for the supply of enriched uranium product, which will be used for the production of Westinghouse fuel assemblies for Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

Also "Energoatom" in cooperation with Areva is exploring the possibility of reprocessing spent nuclear fuel of VVER-1000 reactors of Ukrainian NPPs at the facilities of the French company.
